Jim Brownell MPP Stormont-Dundas-Charlottenburgh
Long-time educator and respected community advocate Jim Brownell was elected MPP of Stormont-Dundas-Charlottenburgh in 2003.
A former teacher with the Upper Canada District school Board, Jim served his community for 14 years as a councillor, deputy-reeve, and reeve in the Township of Cornwall and Township of South Stormont.
Jim has been actively involved in various committees and commissions dedicated to the cultural and recreational development of his community. In December 2000, he was appointed to a three-year term as Commissioner to the St. Lawrence Parks Commission.
In addition, he was a past director with Cornwall and Seaway Valley Tourism and the Raisin Region Conservation Authority. He has served on the Library Board for the United Counties of Stormont, Dundas, and Glengarry and was appointed to the Township of South Stormont's Planning Advisory and Waterfront Development Committee in 2000.
Jim served as president of the Lost Villages Historical Society and Museum from 1992 to 2003. He has been actively involved with many church committees and the Heart and Stroke Foundation. In 2001, Jim was awarded the Ontario Heritage Foundation's Heritage Community Recognition Award and in 2002, his community honoured him with the Queen Elizabeth Golden Jubilee Medal.
Jim is a graduate of the University of Ottawa, where he received a Bachelor of Arts, a Bachelor of Education, and a Master in Education. In 1992, he completed the Principals' Qualification Program at Queen's University. Since 2000, Jim has been an instructor in the Encore Seniors' Programs at St. Lawrence College, Cornwall.
Since being elected to the Ontario Legislature in Oct 2003, Jim has served as Vice-Chair, then Chair of the (past) Standing Committee on Justice and Social Policy. On May 21, 2004, he was appointed Parliamentary Assistant to the Minister of Health and Long-Term Care, charged with the Public Health Portfolio. Jim is also a member of the Standing Committee on Justice Policy, as well as is a member of the Community Affairs Cabinet Committee
Jim is married to Paulette Charlebois. They have two wonderful daughters, Jennifer and Alison.
