Olympic Spirit Grows Stronger After Its Stop In Cornwall

As the Olympic flame made its way down Pitt Street in Cornwall to Lamoureux on Monday December 14th, 2009, thousands of Cornwallites gathered to experience the power of the Olympic Spirit.

The celebrations leading up to the lighting of the cauldron were nothing short of spectacular with the city showcasing its local talent through a short video production by Fishrizzo Productions, dance acts from Sri Lanka, the McCullough Dancers and performers from Akwesasne. Local singer/songwriter Graham Greer sang in the flame with a song from his latest CD aptly named “Bring me Fire”.

The climax of the event was the powerful emotions everyone felt as Rik Saaltink ran the torch through the park to light the cauldron in memory of his late daughter Heather. It was a moment the thousands in attendance will not soon forget.

The spirit of the city was front and center with organizers from VANOC commenting on the attendance exceeding both Montreal and Quebec City combined. The spirit of this city is now part of that Olympic flame which continues its journey to Vancouver, and will be present when the official games cauldron is lit February 12th. The ceremony was inspiring not only for those in attendance but those who took it in second hand thanks to great media coverage by our local cable, radio and print organizations.

Once again Cornwall shows the entire country we are truly a city with a world of possibilities that comes with great spirit and community pride.

A special thanks to the local organizing committee who worked tirelessly to bring it all together in order for the community to gather and celebrate a very special event.
