HMCS Charlottetown to Visit Cornwall
City, Chamber of Commerce and Team Cornwall to Roll-out the Red Carpet for Crew

The HMCS Charlottetown, one of Canada’s state-of-the-art patrol frigates, will be sailing into Cornwall on September 30th at approximately 2:00 pm, for a two-day visit.

“We are extremely pleased to have an opportunity to welcome Commander Steven Waddell and the crew of the HMCS Charlottetown to Cornwall”, said Mayor Bob Kilger. “These brave men and women are on duty for all Canadians, and it is a privilege to have an opportunity to personally express our gratitude for their efforts”.

Cornwall residents will have an opportunity to tour the ship on Wednesday October 1 from 1:30 pm to 6:00 pm. The ship will be docked at the Government wharf at Cornwall Harbour. Due to limited parking at the harbor area, people are asked to park at the east parking lot of the Civic Complex where a shuttle service will be provided to the ship.

“The ship’s company will be on leave during the short time the Charlottetown is in Cornwall, and we are inviting all Cornwall residents and businesses to roll out the red carpet for the crew”, said Debbie Rioux, President of the Cornwall and Area Chamber of Commerce.

“I know that I will be flying the Maple Leaf at home and at the office to let the crew know how much we appreciate their work and sacrifice– and those of their colleagues around the world”, added Gilles Latour, Chair of Team Cornwall. “We hope our neighbours and friends across the City will also fly the flag and if possible, wear red and white while the ship is in town.”

About the HMCS Charlottetown
The HMCS Charlottetown is a multi-role patrol frigate. It carries a sophisticated array of weapon and sensor systems and is capable of speeds in excess of 30 nautical miles (55 km) per hour. It has a normal operating range up to 11,000 kilometers and is equipped to operate with one Sea King helicopter.

The HMCS Charlottetown has a crew of 225 (or 195 without helicopter detachment embarked). The Ship’s motto is: "All Challenges Squarely Met"

The CHARLOTTETOWN was commissioned in September 1995. She proudly carries the name of two World War II predecessors. The first, a “revised” Flower class corvette was torpedoed and sunk by U517 on the St. Lawrence River near Cap Chat, Quebec, on September 11, 1942. The second, a River class frigate, was paid off in Esquimalt, B.C. in 1947.

CHARLOTTETOWN’s operational life has included many sovereignty and fishery patrols in Canadian waters in addition to longer international missions. The ship had two NATO deployments in 1996 and 1998 and in 2001 the CHARLOTTETOWN joined the USS HARRY S. TRUMAN Carrier Battle Group. Later that same year, she was one of the first ships to deploy as part of Canada’s contribution to the war against terrorism following the September 11 attacks on the World Trade Center.

In 2004, she sailed to England and the Netherlands and participated in the 60th Anniversary of D-DAY off the coast of Northern France. In 2006 the frigate had an extensive refit and in 2007 the ship was once again integrated with the USS HARRY S. TRUMAN Carrier Strike Group for operations in the Persian Gulf and the Arabian Sea.
