City Celebrates Watch Tower Convention
Mayor Bob Kilger and Janice Robinson of the Cornwall Civic Complex present Blair Shearer of Watch Tower with a plaque honouring the 10th consecutive year of Jehovah’s Witnesses' Watch Tower convention in the City of Cornwall. |
Each year since 1998, the Cornwall Civic Complex has hosted Watch Tower, the annual Convention of Jehovah’s Witnesses. This year, the City welcomed 16,000 delegates, who attended over four weekends during the month of June.
“This is our tenth year in Cornwall”, commented Don Walters, the organization’s Ottawa based news service representative. “Our first convention was attended by 5,000 people in 1998. We then grew to two, then three, and we now hold four conventions each summer in Cornwall.”
Mayor Bob Kilger thanked the representatives of Watch Tower for choosing the City of Cornwall to host their event. He noted that the activity from the convention and its delegates has generated millions of dollars in expenditures in the community and hospitality sectors. "It is an honour to be able to welcome so many people to our City", said Mayor Bob Kilger. "The delegates and organizers have become an extended family, whose visit each spring is looked forward to with anticipation and warm feelings".
Stephen Alexander, General Manager, Department of Planning, Parks & Recreation noted that the Civic Complex, with its waterfront location and nearby shopping and restaurants, has become an ideal setting for this convention.
