New hospice to be located in Riverdale
With City Council’s recent approval of $500,000 to help build a new palliate care hospice, Carefor Health & Community Services Eastern Counties, (formally known as VON) had no problems coming up with a name for the project: “Hospice Cornwall”.
"The development of a Hospice in our community will serve as an important addition to the health care facilities available in our community. The City of Cornwall is pleased to be able to play an important role in this initiative and we would like to extend to Carefor our best wishes in the successful completion of this project," said Cornwall Mayor Bob Kilger.
Recognizing the need of Cornwall and the United Counties’ aging population, the Ontario Ministry of Health and Long Term Care agreed to fund part of the ongoing operational budget for the hospice once it opens, leaving Carefor’s Board with the daunting task of deciding to raise $2.5 million dollars to build the hospice.
Another very important piece of the puzzle was delivered by St. Matthew’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, which has offered the use of 1.1 acres of vacant land behind the Second Street West church site for the nominal cost of $1.00 per year for the next 50 years. During the same media conference, the Rotary Club of Cornwall-Sunrise also pledged $50,000 to support the project.
