City, Smart Centres Dialogue Continues

City of Cornwall, Ontario The City of Cornwall continues to work with Smart Centres on finding an alternative location for their proposed commercial development. In addition to ongoing conversations and dialogue, Mayor Bob Kilger recently sent a letter to Dennis Eberhard, Vice-President, Development of Smart Centres. In the letter, Mayor Kilger reiterated Cornwall’s positive attitude of welcoming new investment and growth.

“There is a perception that City Council, in rejecting the Tollgate Road proposal, rejected Smart Centres”, said Mayor Kilger. “That is simply not true. My office and the Planning Advisory Committee have encouraged further discussion and review of alternative sites for the proposed development.”

The City’s Economic Development Strategic Plan has an action plan that “encourages investment...(in) large commercial development”. It also recognizes the need to increase the City’s profile along Highway 401 and increase the inflow of transient visitors and shoppers that currently drive by the City each day.

“With the decline of the manufacturing sector in North America and demographic and cultural trends changing how Canadians shop, Cornwall must be willing to accommodate new investment that will bring new construction, new assessment, and new jobs”, said Mayor Kilger. “We must work together with investors like Smart Centres to help Cornwall compete with similar regional developments in other Eastern Ontario communities.”

Both the Economic Development Department and the Planning Department continue to work with Smart Centres as well as several other companies seeking to invest and develop projects in Cornwall.
