Cornwall Unveils A New, Modern Brand
CORNWALL, ON (September 24, 2007) – Cornwall’s Economic Development department today unveiled for City Council’s consideration a new brand image logo and slogan, evoking images of the St. Lawrence River, extensive open spaces and a community proud of its history and confident of future successes.
With the slogan, or tag line, “A City with a World of Possibilities,” the new logo features the word “Cornwall,” coloured blue in a progressive, modern font, with a vivid green arc extending above it.
John Charette, vice-president and creative director for the City’s marketing firm, Banfield-Seguin Limited, explained that the logo’s shape and colours were chosen to reflect prevailing features and attitudes about the community.
The blue for the lettering represents the richness of the St. Lawrence River and also connects to the traditional use of the colour in previous City logos. The green, curving arc extending over the City’s name reflects the community’s abundance of open space and concern for the environment, along with its forward-looking vision of further success in the future.
“The logo is simple, yet striking and memorable”, said Mr. Charette. “Its versatility will suit a wide range of uses.”
Presenting a super-sized business card as an example of the logo’s use, Mark Boileau, manager of Cornwall Economic Development, told Council that the visual elements would provide the City with a highly marketable representation of the community.
With Council’s approval, the brand logo and tag line would be presented prominently across all City operations, on letterhead, vehicles and signs, as well as in all external marketing activities.
Development of a new brand identity was recommended by Cornwall’s Economic Development Strategic Plan. A component of the brand strategy, the proposed logo and tag line were created with input from local residents through various City sponsored forums, including the highly successful “It’s My Cornwall” contest. The adoption of the two brand elements by Council has been endorsed by the City’s Economic Development Strategic Plan Implementation Committee.
“When I look at the logo and see the examples of how it could be applied, I can easily visualize all of the key ingredients of our community. The visual elements of our new brand will help us share our enthusiasm and potential with others, who will want to be a part of what is happening here,” said Boileau.
Boileau and Charette noted that the logo and tag line are only one aspect of the overall brand, and alone will not enable the City to achieve its ultimate goal of attracting new businesses and residents.
As a critical next step, the City will continue its work with Banfield-Seguin to market the brand through a variety of initiatives, which are currently being planned or underway in response to opportunities identified in the strategic plan.
Cornwall is a city of 47,000 people, situated along the St. Lawrence River and Highway 401. One of Canada’s oldest settlements (established 1784), Cornwall today is a progressive, family oriented centre, sustained by a growing, multi-faceted economy that features affordable housing and a diversity of commercial businesses and industries.
