Team Cornwall Welcomes Stanley Cup

Gilles Latour and Chris Savard present Newell Brown with a special Team Cornwall hockey jersey.
When Lord Stanley visits Cornwall, hundreds of his friends and admirers come out to say hello.

That was the scenario yesterday as throngs of local hockey fans lined up to view or have their picture taken with hockey’s top prize, the Stanley Cup. The event was made possible compliments of Cornwall’s Newell Brown, a former member of the Cornwall Royals, and now an assistant coach with the Stanley Cup champion Anaheim Ducks.

The Cup was scheduled to be on display in Salons AB&C of the Civic Complex from 1 – 3 PM on Tuesday afternoon. The lineup began forming at 10 AM, and by one o’clock, it stretched from the Salons, through the concourse, up the stairs and outside of the main entrance to the building. By shortly before 4 PM, all fans had been accommodated with either a Newell Brown autograph, a photo with the Cup, or simply an opportunity to view the celebrated trophy.

In his opening remarks to the crowd, Team Cornwall Chair Gilles Latour mentioned that throughout his career, Newell had always proudly referred to his hometown as “Cornwall”, and never as “a small city near Ottawa’, as so often happens. That was one of the topics addressed by Brown when he spoke to the crowd. To enthusiastic cheering, he said “People asked me where I was taking the Cup, and I always answered CORNWALL!”

Prior to the autograph session, Latour and Vice-Chair Chris Savard presented Brown with a set of Team Cornwall cards and a Team Cornwall hockey jersey with his name and number.
