Cornwall to Showcase Enhanced Image
The City of Cornwall intends to find just the right approach to use to effectively describe and promote its modern image, as it begins the branding phase of its economic development strategy to attract new businesses and promote further prosperity.
Developing a local appreciation for Cornwall’s present-day qualities and features, as well as identifying and correcting misconceptions about the community are among the primary steps of the branding initiative, being undertaken by the city’s economic development department with guidance from the marketing firm Banfield-Seguin Limited, of Ottawa.
“Cornwall has been experiencing a variety of changes that have positively affected who we are, what we have to offer, the quality of life we enjoy and our plans for the future,” says Mayor Bob Kilger. “It’s important that we capture an accurate description of our new city and effectively tell our story in a way that will make people sit up and take notice – and want to join us.”
Determining the city’s brand, or image, is much more than designing a new logo and coming up with a catchy slogan, the mayor emphasizes. The city is looking to Banfield-Seguin for guidance in identifying, understanding and correcting false and outdated impressions about Cornwall that exist within and outside the community.
Following from the findings of the city’s 2006 strategic plan update, the economic development department and Banfield-Seguin marketing specialists will host a series of discussion forums, asking representatives from business, community organizations and residential neighbourhoods to come to a consensus about Cornwall’s present-day image.
Banfield-Seguin will also determine what approaches could be used to attract the interest of business decision makers from outside the community and encourage them to investigate the benefits of working and living in Cornwall.
“I’m enthused about the branding phase of our economic development plan,” says Mayor Kilger. “We’re moving forward from the results of last year’s strategic plan; we’ll be involving a broad cross-section of the community in this initiative; we’ll be developing a better understanding of the new Cornwall; and we’ll be identifying outside businesses that would be open to discussions about locating here.”
