Cornwall In Hockeyville Top Ten
Cornwall has reached a new plateau in its quest to be Canada’s #1 hockey town.
In a special edition of the CBC program, Cornwall was announced as one of ten communities across Canada in the race for the title of Kraft Hockeyville 2007. The other communities in contention include Plaster Rock, N.B., Nanaimo, B.C., Rockyford, Alberta, St-Hubert, Quebec, Warner, Alberta, Noelville, Ontario, Vernon, B.C., North Bay, Ontario and Smithers B.C.
Now that the Top 10 have been announced, the final decision rests in the hands of hockey fans in Cornwall and across Canada. The list of 10 communities will be reduced to a Top 5 based on the number of votes each community receives on the CBC Kraft Hockeyville 2007 website. The public has until 11a.m. on Friday March 9th to vote for their favourite. The following night, the final five communities will be announced during a feature on Hockey Night in Canada. Canadians will then go back to the polls to vote for their favourite community until March 16th. The Kraft Hockeyville 2007 title and trophy will be awarded on Hockey Night in Canada on March 17th.
Lorne Taillon, the city’s leisure arts co-ordinator, is calling for a total community effort to produce enough votes to win, urging schools, businesses and residents to vote as often as possible. Says Taillon, “Now it’s a popularity contest. The main thing now is we need people to vote as often as they can.”
Should Cornwall’s bid be successful, the grand prize includes the 2007 Hockeyville title and trophy, the opportunity to host a one-of-a-kind NHL hockey event, $50,000 for upgrades to a publicly-owned arena, and a community feature on CBC.
Cornwall’s Kraft Hockeyville video submission has already claimed one prize. Last week, officials announced yesterday that the Cornwall entry has been awarded the Family Merit Prize for cultivating fellowship by bringing together parents, players, role models, and residents. The prize, valued at approximately $10,000, includes an Ultimate Skating Party featuring two NHL legends and a Delissio pizza party. Date, time and details of the event have yet to be announced.
